The man who allegedly crashed into former President Jacob Zuma’s car is set to appear in court on Tuesday morning at the Eshowe Magistrates Court in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The incident occurred last Thursday when the man crashed into Zuma’s official convoy as it was travelling from Eshowe to his Nkandla homestead.

Zuma was inside his car at the time but fortunately, he was unharmed and quickly evacuated to his residence by his security team.

The 51-year-old man is facing charges of drinking and driving, as well as reckless and negligent driving. Photos of the incident reveal damage to the driver’s side door of Zuma’s black BMW.

In response to the incident, Zuma’s party, the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK), has called for increased security for the former president.

However, Police Minister Bheki Cele has stated that Zuma’s security detail is already sufficient and comparable to that of other former heads of state.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as the case progresses.
