South Africa’s annual consumer price inflation fell to 4.3% in July from 5% in June, marking its first decline in five months. The monthly increase in the Consumer Price Index slowed to 0.2% from 0.7% in June.

Statistics South Africa said softer food prices, lower municipal tariff increases and falling fuel prices drove the slowdown.

South Africa Inflation Falls As Food Prices Ease

Food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation slowed to 0.9% in July, its lowest level since June 2010. Patrick Kelly, Chief Director for Price Statistics, said the lower rate was mainly driven by cereal products and meat. Cereal product prices recorded an annual decline of 2%, compared with a 1.5% decrease in June.

“Incidentally, that was the month that South Africa hosted the World Cup. This month’s lower rate was mainly due to cereal products and meat. Cereal products recorded an annual change of -2 percent, down from -1.5 percent in June,” Kelly said.

Annual meat inflation also eased significantly, falling to 1.5% in July from 5.1% in June. Kelly said the overall slowdown was linked to three main factors. “The slowdown can be attributed to three main factors: Softer inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages, lower municipal tariff increases and a decline in fuel prices,” he said.

Municipal tariffs also recorded smaller annual increases in 2026 than in the previous year. Electricity prices increased by 8.1%, compared with a 10.4% rise in 2025. Water tariffs rose by 10.2%, down from 12.1% last year.

Transport inflation also contributed to the lower overall rate. It dropped to 8.9% in July from 12.9% in June. The decline came alongside lower fuel prices, adding to the factors that helped bring headline inflation down to 4.3%.
