The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has arrested a “high-profile” suspect in Lenasia South in connection with recent gang violence.

The arrest followed information received by members of the JMPD Tactical Response Unit during high-visibility patrols. Police are investigating the suspect’s possible involvement in a Westbury shooting that left four people dead.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said officers acted on information linking the suspect to recent gang violence.

Officers went to Lenasia South Extension 4, where they found and arrested the suspect. He was allegedly carrying an unlicensed revolver with its serial number filed off.

During questioning, the suspect allegedly directed officers to another location on the same street. Police found a “Tommy Gun” submachine firearm and live ammunition at the location. The weapons were confiscated and the suspect was taken to Lenasia South Police Station.

The suspect faces charges relating to the possession of unlicensed firearms and prohibited weapons. Investigators are also examining his alleged connection to the deadly Westbury shootings. Fihla praised the Tactical Response Unit officers for what he described as their “outstanding bravery” and commitment to public safety.

“Their vigilance, swift execution, and composure under pressure directly resulted in taking dangerous, illegal weaponry off the streets and bringing a key suspect into custody.”
