SPAR chairman Mike Bosman and deputy chair Shirley Zinn have resigned from the retail group, effective Monday, 17 August.

The company said the departures came in the “context of the period that both directors and the Board have recently experienced”. SPAR has appointed Lwazi Koyana as interim chairman while the search for permanent replacements gets under way.

SPAR Chairman Mike Bosman Steps Down

Bosman became SPAR chairman in December 2022 following reported governance issues at the group. He also served as executive chairman from January to October 2023 to provide leadership continuity. SPAR said his tenure helped strengthen governance, risk and control systems while restoring operational continuity.

“Under his chairmanship, the Group’s governance, risk and control environment strengthened, the portfolio was simplified, and operational continuity was restored,” SPAR said.

Bosman has also held several other senior positions, including non-executive chairman of Spur Corporation. He currently serves as non-executive chairman of Stellenbosch-based wholesale wine company Vinimark.

Zinn joined SPAR in February 2023 and became deputy chair four months later. She played a central role in the group’s governance during her tenure. “The Board thanks them both for their dedication, professionalism, and the meaningful legacy of their service, and wishes them well in their future endeavours,” SPAR said.

Koyana, a chartered accountant, has been appointed to lead the board on an interim basis. He is CEO of Capital Advisors and chairman of Steve Biko Academic Hospital. “A highly respected business leader and Chartered Accountant, Koyana brings deep expertise across finance, governance, risk and entrepreneurship,” SPAR said.

SPAR said the process of appointing permanent replacements has already begun. The group added that its executive leadership under CEO Reeza Isaacs remains unchanged and that its business priorities will continue. These include restoring retailer profitability, improving wholesale and distribution performance and unlocking the potential of its independent retail model.
