A handwritten journal containing a list of people described as enemies of the white race has become part of a police investigation following a deadly standoff at a farm in Robertson.
Western Cape police are investigating whether the suspected extremist acted alone or had links to a wider network. The man was killed after a gun battle at a farm in De Hoop that began on Sunday evening and continued until Monday night.
One police officer was wounded during the standoff and remains in hospital. Provincial Deputy Police Commissioner for Crime Detection Bongani Maqashalala said attempts to negotiate with the suspect were unsuccessful.
Police later searched the scene and recovered firearms, ammunition, an old South African flag and a handwritten journal titled “The Enemies of the Boer”.

Police are examining the contents of the journal as part of their investigation. Maqashalala said authorities would not release the names recorded in the document to prevent unnecessary alarm. He said the individuals listed were from several provinces.

“I’m not going to get into the details of the journal because it has a number of people’s names and we don’t want to scare people. Some of them are from the Western Cape, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and I think there is one from the Eastern Cape and KZN as well.”
