The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is expected to withdraw charges against Crime Intelligence Head Dumisani Khumalo, Brigadier Dineo Mokwele and their co-accused this week.

The case dates back to arrests in June 2025 and involves allegations of fraud and corruption linked to Mokwele’s appointment as a brigadier. The accused have denied the allegations.

The planned withdrawal follows evidence at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that raised concerns about the investigation behind the prosecution. NPA head Andy Mothibi subsequently announced that the charges would be dropped.

The allegations against Khumalo included claims involving recruitment procedures, security vetting and top-secret clearances.

Prosecutors also accused Khumalo of mismanaging secret intelligence funds linked to the unit and appointments. The accused have denied wrongdoing. Evidence presented at the Madlanga Commission has also raised claims that the prosecution was part of an effort to remove them from their positions.
