WhatsApp messages belonging to the late taxi boss Jothan Msibi, also known as ‘King Mswazi’, have revealed his alleged dealings involving state departments, the Ekurhuleni municipality and a transport venture linked to businessman Suliman Carrim.

Msibi, who died in January 2024, has previously been identified during testimony as the former head of the alleged Big Five cartel.

Several people identified as alleged associates of Msibi, including Steve Motsumi, Hangwani Maumela, Fannie Nkosi, Katiso Molefe and Carrim, reportedly met at his farm.

Messages presented to the commission also detailed an alleged arrangement involving Msibi and Sergeant Fannie Nkosi to sell grabber technology in eSwatini.

The messages indicate that the technology was purchased from a company in the Czech Republic, while Nkosi allegedly misrepresented the transaction as being connected to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Msibi Messages Detail Alleged Ekurhuleni Tender Influence

Further WhatsApp exchanges between Msibi and businessman Ze Nxumalo reportedly showed Msibi’s alleged influence over an Ekurhuleni municipal tender in 2023.

Before the tender, Msibi reportedly communicated with then city manager Imogen Mashazi. Nxumalo allegedly sent a message stating:

“Euro banks closed at 4:00 p.m. We’ve locked the trade. so she will receive 46,256 euros.”

Nxumalo denies the messages.

Msibi was also linked to a transport venture involving Carrim and Transnational Coaches, from which he allegedly received payments.

The Madlanga Commission is expected to continue its proceedings on Wednesday with Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams.
