Three learners at Keledi Secondary School are facing disciplinary action after a video widely shared on social media allegedly captured them assaulting a fellow learner.
The Mpumalanga Department of Education said it was deeply concerned and shocked by the footage, which shows three female learners in school uniform attacking another girl at the school in Acornhoek, within the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.

In the video, other learners can be heard cheering as the incident unfolds. The victim is seen being kicked while some of the alleged attackers pull her by her braided hair.
A separate video, believed to have been recorded shortly afterwards, shows the learner lying on the ground as other pupils laugh nearby.
The department has not confirmed the grades of the learners involved, and it remains unclear when the incident took place.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the department strongly condemned violence, intimidation and bullying, saying such behaviour compromises the rights, dignity and safety of learners.
“Schools are centres of learning, care and protection, and any behaviour that threatens the wellbeing of learners is completely unacceptable.”
Education officials said the School Governing Body at Keledi Secondary School had been instructed to begin disciplinary proceedings immediately against the learners implicated in the incident.

The three learners are expected to be suspended while disciplinary hearings are conducted, in accordance with policies and prescripts governing the learner code of conduct.
“The Department has further requested the school to submit a comprehensive report outlining the circumstances surrounding the incident and the interventions already undertaken by the school.”
Officials from the department’s wellness section will visit the school on Monday, 18 May 2026, to provide psychosocial support to the affected learner and to any other pupils who may have been emotionally affected.
“The department remains committed to promoting safe, disciplined and conducive learning environments across all schools in the province.”
“Learners, parents, educators and community members are encouraged to work collectively in confronting bullying and to report such incidents without delay,” it added.
