The Madlanga Commission has rejected Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s claim that his relationship with reputed cartel boss Jotham Msibi was strictly professional.
Matlala is appearing before the commission to testify about his links to several people whose names have featured in proceedings. His evidence has so far covered his friendship with controversial businessman Hangwani Maumela and his dealings with taxi bosses Msibi and Steve Motsumi.
Previous testimony before the commission has identified Msibi as the alleged head of the Big Five Cartel.
Madlanga Commission Questions Matlala’s Relationship With Msibi
When he began giving evidence, Matlala said his relationship with Msibi was based on business, with his company, Cat VIP Protection Services, providing security services to the taxi boss.
However, Matlala also told the commission that Msibi referred to him as “son” and had sought his advice about where to purchase a Rolex for his wife.

Evidence leaders later presented WhatsApp messages exchanged between Matlala and Msibi. The messages included proof of payment documents and discussions about payments involving Maumela.
Commissioner Sesi Baloyi questioned Matlala about whether his description of his relationship with Msibi as purely professional was accurate.

Responding to the commissioner, Matlala maintained that he had not described Msibi as a friend and repeated that their dealings were centred on the services he provided.

“Yes, commissioner, I also said that most of the time I would go be with him and he even called me son. But he was not my friend – that’s what I said. I also said I did not have businesses with him except for me rendering services to him,” explained Matlala.
Matlala is expected to continue his testimony when the Madlanga Commission resumes on Wednesday morning.
