The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have made it clear that if the National Assembly adopts what they consider a flawed 2025 budget report this Wednesday, they will take the matter to court.

The party has expressed concerns over what they believe is a breach of parliamentary procedures, specifically accusing the African National Congress (ANC) of failing to follow the necessary legislative processes. This contentious development comes just days before the final vote on the fiscal framework.

Speaker Thoko Didiza has rejected claims from multiple opposition parties, including the EFF, that the process leading up to the adoption of the fiscal framework did not adhere to house rules or the Money Bills Act.

Didiza has stood by the legitimacy of the committee’s actions, despite growing dissent from various political factions.

The EFF’s Omphile Maotwe, however, remains adamant that the real issue lies with the ANC’s disregard for established procedures, not any behind-the-scenes alliances with other political groups.

“It will be the failure of the ANC to have followed legislative processes,” Maotwe stated. “That will be the undoing of the Government of National Unity.”

EFF Calls for Tax Adjustments and Threatens Court Action

Maotwe also elaborated on the EFF’s stance regarding the proposed budget measures. The party firmly opposes a value-added tax (VAT) increase and instead advocates for adjustments to personal tax brackets to account for inflation.

Furthermore, they are pushing for increases in corporate and wealth taxes.

“If you vote for this fiscal framework and revenue proposal today against the advice, we are going to challenge you in court for failing to follow the law, that is clear and basic,” Maotwe warned.
