The Gautrain Management Agency says a reported robbery involving a 21-year-old passenger did not take place on its network. The passenger had claimed that three men pointed a gun at him and stole his iPhone and AirPods while he was travelling between Midrand and Rosebank. Gautrain security later met with the passenger and his family on Friday to investigate the report.
According to the agency, CCTV footage showed the passenger leaving the Gautrain system without any incident. During the meeting with security officials, the passenger reportedly admitted that the robbery had not occurred on the Gautrain network.
Gautrain spokesperson Albi Modise confirmed the development. “During the engagement, the passenger admitted that the reported robbery did not occur on the Gautrain network.”
Gautrain CCTV Footage Disputes Robbery Report
The alleged Gautrain robbery initially triggered an investigation after the passenger reported the incident to security officials. The agency reviewed CCTV footage as part of its investigation into the passenger’s claim.
Gautrain said the footage did not show evidence of a robbery and instead captured the passenger leaving the system without incident. The passenger’s family later issued a public statement confirming that the robbery had not happened on the Gautrain and apologised to the agency.

The agency said the incident demonstrated the importance of properly investigating reports involving passenger safety. It also praised its security personnel for how they handled the matter.

Passenger Admits Gautrain Robbery Did Not Happen

The family’s apology followed the passenger’s admission that the alleged robbery did not occur while he was using the Gautrain network. Gautrain has not said where the alleged robbery may have occurred.

The agency has not indicated whether the passenger could face criminal charges over the initial report. It also has not confirmed whether any further action will be taken following the admission.
