The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Mazwi Mpumelelo Khubeka has taken a significant turn after Gauteng authorities shared fresh details about the case.

The 27-year-old spaza shop owner reappeared unexpectedly at Vosloorus Police Station after being missing throughout April, sparking widespread speculation across social media.

Initial claims suggested Khubeka had been kidnapped by foreign nationals linked to spaza shop operations, allegedly due to a business dispute. His family had voiced concerns about foreign-owned shops, although no formal evidence has been publicly confirmed.

While Khubeka has been found alive, questions have persisted about his whereabouts and the circumstances of his disappearance.

Gauteng Authorities Confirm Progress In Mazwi Khubeka Investigation

Addressing the media on Sunday, 3 May 2026, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said law enforcement had made headway in identifying those allegedly involved in the incident.

“We want to reiterate that this matter is not closed. There are areas that we believe, if we follow up on this case, it will assist us in resolving many other cases that are either similar or of the same nature,” Lesufi said.

He explained that certain details had been withheld during the investigation to avoid jeopardising progress or alerting suspects, which may have created the impression that little was being done.

Lesufi also confirmed that the group implicated in the kidnapping includes both South African citizens and foreign nationals.

“We can confirm it is a combination of two South Africans and foreign nationals, including two suspects of Ethiopian origin,” he said.

Police Probe Possible Links To Spaza Shop Crime Networks

Authorities are now working to determine whether the case is connected to disputes within the spaza shop sector or forms part of a broader pattern of criminal activity.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni revealed that Khubeka reported being guarded by two Malawian nationals during his captivity.

According to Mthombeni, the victim struggled to provide a full account of his ordeal.

He said Khubeka had been blindfolded for most of the time, limiting his ability to identify locations or fully describe events.

Investigations remain ongoing as police continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the case.
