Western Cape police have arrested four suspects in Bellville as part of an operation targeting an alleged extortion network.
The arrests were made on Sunday, 16 August, following a two-year investigation into alleged criminal activity in Khayamandi and Stellenbosch. More than 50 Somali and Ethiopian business owners were allegedly targeted.

The suspects include three family members from Nyanga, one of whom is a police constable, and a Somali businessman accused of collecting extortion payments.

Police seized R120,000 in cash, four vehicles valued at about R3 million and several firearms during the operation. The suspects are aged between 23 and 53.

The four suspects face charges including extortion, money laundering and offences under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA). They are expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on 18 August. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
