Police have opened a murder investigation following the death of a 28-year-old man who was run over by a cash-in-transit van in Mpumalanga.

The incident, which took place earlier this week in Bushbuckridge, has widely circulated on social media through graphic video footage.

Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, although preliminary information suggests the deceased allegedly attempted to rob the vehicle using a sharp object.

Family members have identified the deceased as Eugene Thabiso Mashego from Graskop in Shatale, Bushbuckridge.

Cash-In-Transit Robbery Attempt In Bushbuckridge

According to police, the cash-in-transit van was parked in Bushbuckridge and occupied by two security officers at the time of the incident. One of the officers had reportedly gone into a nearby shop.

Police allege that a man armed with a sharp object approached the vehicle, opened the passenger door and attacked the security officer who remained seated in the driver’s seat.

“It is further reported that some security officers became aware of what was happening and are said to have fired shots at the alleged attacker, who fell to the ground.

“It is further alleged that the driver of the cash-in-transit vehicle subsequently drove over the man, who was later certified dead at the scene,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli.

Police Warn Against Sharing Graphic Viral Video

Police have also expressed concern over the circulation of the disturbing footage linked to the incident.

Authorities urged the public not to share or forward the video, warning that the content could cause additional trauma to the families affected as well as sensitive viewers online.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
