Meta is bringing its artificial intelligence ambitions directly into Threads, testing a new feature that allows its chatbot to publicly reply to posts with additional context.

The experimental tool gives Meta AI functionality similar to Grok, the AI assistant integrated into X. With the update, users will be able to ask Meta AI questions about trending discussions and receive public responses within Threads conversations.

Meta says the feature is in “early beta” and will initially be available to users in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina and Singapore.

Threads Users Can Ask Meta AI For Context On Trending Topics

To support the rollout, Meta AI now has its own official Threads account, @meta.ai, allowing users to interact with the chatbot alongside their regular conversations.

Meta suggests that users could ask questions such as, “why are people talking about the World Cup this month?” and receive a public AI-generated explanation. Users can also tag Meta AI in replies to other posts.

The feature mirrors a common habit on X, where users frequently ask Grok to verify claims by posting prompts such as “is this true???”

Concerns Raised Over Public AI Responses On Social Platforms

Giving an AI chatbot a prominent role in public discussions may also create challenges.

On X, Grok has drawn criticism after generating pro-Nazi comments, flattering remarks about Elon Musk and child abuse material. While Meta has generally taken a more cautious approach to safeguards, questions remain about whether users could manipulate Meta AI in similar ways.

Meta is providing users with tools to limit the feature’s visibility. The company says people can mute the Meta AI account and hide replies posted beneath their own Threads posts.

Spark Model Powers Broader Meta AI Expansion

The Threads experiment comes as Meta pushes a revamped version of Meta AI powered by its latest Muse Spark model.

The same model is also being used to test “side chats” in WhatsApp and other apps. These private chats allow users to ask Meta AI for additional context about conversations taking place in group threads. Unlike the Threads feature, the responses are visible only to the person asking the question.

Muse Spark is also powering an upgraded version of Live AI in the Meta AI app. Previously available only through Meta’s smart glasses, the tool enables users to point their phone camera at objects and receive real-time explanations.

A recent report noted that human moderators may review some recordings of Live AI sessions, which can include personal moments.

Ray-Ban And Oakley Smart Glasses To Receive Spark Upgrade

Meta says the Spark model is beginning to roll out to Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses in the United States and Canada. The technology is also expected to arrive on display-equipped frames later this summer.

Muse Spark marks the first major launch from Meta’s “superintelligence” group as the company builds a new foundation for its AI work beyond the Llama era.

Mark Zuckerberg has also hinted at plans to develop OpenClaw-like AI agents that will run on future versions of the model.
