The Hawks in Limpopo have made significant progress in their investigation into a fraud and theft case involving the Sekhukhune Municipality.

Last week, four suspects were arrested in connection with the case, including the municipality’s senior administration officer, Kedibone Magagane.

However, the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO), a key figure in the alleged fraudulent activities, managed to evade arrest until now.

The former CFO, whose name has not been released, is expected to appear in court on Tuesday to face charges related to the fraudulent awarding of tenders to different security companies in 2018.

These companies, it is alleged, never provided any services to the municipality.

The investigation revealed a complex web of collusion and corruption involving the former CFO, the senior administration officer, and other companies who never rendered any services but deposited money into the officials’ accounts.

The funds were later shared among the conspirators, while the legitimate service providers were left unpaid.

The total amount involved in the fraud and theft case is estimated to be around R5 million. The arrests of the four suspects last week marked a significant breakthrough for the Hawks in their efforts to bring those responsible to justice.

The arrest of the former Sekhukhune Municipality CFO and the other suspects has serious implications for the Sekhukhune Municipality. The fraudulent activities have not only resulted in financial losses for the municipality but have also undermined public trust and confidence in the local government.

The municipality will now have to take immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future. This may involve implementing stricter financial controls, conducting internal audits, and reviewing procurement processes to prevent similar fraud and corruption.

Furthermore, the municipality will need to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation and provide any necessary information and evidence to assist the prosecution in building a strong case against the accused individuals.
