The incident in question involved two police officers from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), who found themselves in a precarious situation following a widely circulated video.

In the footage, one of the officers was observed driving a state vehicle and providing a lift to an off-duty colleague. Notably, the off-duty officer was wearing regalia associated with a political party, which has significant implications for the perceived impartiality of law enforcement personnel.

This incident led to swift disciplinary actions from the provincial commissioner. Both officers were promptly removed from their election deployment duties, highlighting the seriousness with which the South African Police Service (SAPS) addresses breaches of conduct, especially during sensitive periods such as elections.

SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshuinda says disciplinary steps will be taken against the two police officers.

“The Provincial Commissioner ordered that the two officers must be removed from the Elections deployment with immediate effect.

“He said that police officers must be professional at all times and respect the oath that they took when they voluntarily joined the South African Police Service.

“On more than one occasion General Mkhwanazi reiterated to the members of the South African Police Service here in KwaZulu-Natal that they should be apolitical and leave politics to politicians.

“I emphasised the fact that police officers must never campaign or be seen to be campaigning for any political party.”
