The corruption trial involving former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is set to resume on Wednesday, with her legal team continuing the cross-examination of an interior decorator who previously testified about receiving substantial cash payments for renovations at the former minister’s Bruma home.
Interior designer Nomsa Shabangu has been giving evidence about the refurbishment project, which took place between 2018 and 2020. Her testimony forms part of the State’s case against Mapisa-Nqakula, who faces 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering.
Prosecutors allege that Mapisa-Nqakula solicited R4.5 million from defence contractor Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu. The former minister has denied the allegations against her.
Cash Payments For Bruma Home Renovations Under Scrutiny
During proceedings on Tuesday, Shabangu told the court that Mapisa-Nqakula paid her between R1.7 million and R1.8 million between 2018 and 2020, with most of the payments allegedly made in cash.
According to her testimony, the money covered furniture purchases and building materials used during the renovation project.
The court also heard evidence from Emmanuel Mulaudzi, who prepared the architectural plans for the renovations. He testified that he received R70,000 in cash for his work on the property.
Witness Says Outstanding Payment Remains Unpaid
Shabangu further testified that Mapisa-Nqakula still owes her R200,000 for services rendered during the renovation project.

Despite claiming the outstanding amount remains unpaid, Shabangu told the court that she would not pursue the payment because she regards Mapisa-Nqakula as a sister.

The cross-examination of Shabangu is expected to continue when the matter returns to court on Wednesday.
