The RFA believes the reduction will have only a limited impact on overall transport costs, as other expenses and levies continue to affect the sector.

The latest reduction in diesel prices is expected to provide some breathing room for South Africa’s road freight sector, but industry leaders warn that transport operators remain burdened by rising costs.

Diesel prices decreased by as much as R3.25 per litre from midnight, while motorists faced higher petrol prices, with both petrol grades increasing by R1.43 per litre.

According to the Road Freight Association (RFA), the fuel adjustment does not reverse the steep increases experienced by transport companies over recent months.

Gavin Kelly, CEO of the RFA, said fuel prices remain substantially higher than they were earlier in the year.

“We’ve seen since the beginning of the year roughly a 79 percent increase in the cost of fuel. So, this isn’t going back to what the numbers were at the end of February. This is only the beginning of what we hope is going to be a continual decline and that means that there’s still a fair amount of transporters out there who are struggling with the high cost of fuel,” Kelly said.

Diesel Price Reduction Fails To Offset Earlier Fuel Cost Increases

While the latest decrease has eased some pressure on operators, Kelly noted that the industry continues to feel the effects of months of elevated fuel costs.

The freight sector relies heavily on diesel, making fuel one of its largest operating expenses. As a result, previous increases have placed considerable strain on transport businesses across the country.

Kelly said the recent adjustment should be viewed as a positive step, but not a complete solution to the challenges facing transporters.

Road Freight Industry Continues To Face Rising Operating Costs

The RFA believes the reduction will have only a limited impact on overall transport costs, as other expenses and levies continue to affect the sector.

Kelly said transport operators are still grappling with the financial burden created by higher fuel prices despite the latest decrease.

“The two-three-rand, depending on the type of diesel that you use, has brought some relief, but still has quite an impact on transporters in the country,” Kelly said.

Industry stakeholders will be hoping for further reductions in fuel prices in the coming months as businesses seek greater stability in operating costs.
