KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has vowed that those responsible for the killing of crime intelligence officer Louis Nel will be tracked down and brought to justice.

Nel was shot and killed in northern Durban last week during an attack that also left his colleague injured.

Family members, friends, colleagues and mourners gathered at the Durban Christian Centre to pay their final respects to the former special task force operator during an official SAPS funeral service.

Addressing mourners at the service, Mkhwanazi said the loss of a police officer, particularly one with specialised training and experience, was deeply painful for the police service.

“For me on my side, having worn the badge, having gone through the trouble that Captain Nel has gone through, I understand the pain and anger that the members, especially the members of the specialised task force, have at this stage that a criminal is able to eliminate one of our operators of the special task force.”
