However, the situation is complicated by conflicting accounts from local community members. Many assert that Tshabalala was indeed left in a cold room, a claim that has intensified public outcry and demands for justice.
Colonel Noxolo Kweza, a spokesperson for the police, has stated the case. Colonel Kweza confirmed that an investigation is underway and that the authorities are committed to uncovering the facts.
The investigation includes verifying the conflicting claims and ensuring that all evidence is thoroughly examined. The statement underscores the complexity of the case and the need for a meticulous approach to ascertain the truth.
The incident has not only led to an official investigation but also galvanized the community and various advocacy groups, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have responded vehemently to the tragic incident involving the death of Mr Tshabalala in a Shoprite store’s cold room. EFF spokesperson Dumisani Baleni has condemned the actions of the Shoprite management, particularly focusing on the treatment of Tshabalala.
“While the EFF does not condone theft in any form, what happened to Tshabalala is a gross violation of human rights,” said Baleni. He further emphasized that the store manager’s decision to lock Tshabalala in the cold room was not only punitive but also reckless, ultimately leading to a preventable death.
The EFF has demanded that Shoprite take full responsibility for the incident, including providing adequate compensation to Tshabalala’s family. “The family deserves justice and financial support during this devastating time,” Baleni added.
He also called for the broader community to stand in solidarity with the Bandile Tshabalala family, urging other political and civil organizations to join the EFF in demanding justice.
The party has consistently advocated for better working conditions and strict adherence to human rights across all sectors. “This incident is a stark reminder that we must continue to fight for the dignity and safety of every individual,” Baleni concluded.
In the wake of the tragic incident, Shoprite has issued an official statement expressing deep condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr Tshabalala.
A spokesperson for the supermarket giant conveyed the company’s profound sorrow over the event, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr Tshabalala’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.
Shoprite has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation. The company stated the seriousness with which it views the allegations surrounding the ‘cold room death’.
“We are taking these allegations very seriously and will support the investigative process in any way necessary,” the spokesperson added. The supermarket chain has also promised to undertake an internal review to ascertain the facts and determine any potential lapses in protocol or safety measures.
“We are committed to uncovering the truth and taking all necessary steps based on the findings of both the police investigation and our internal review,” the statement added.
