Police in Mpumalanga have made significant strides in combating vehicle theft, with the recovery of more than 20 stolen vehicles in the province since the beginning of 2024. One notable incident involved a truck hijacking in Standerton on Friday.
The truck, which was transporting soya, was forcefully driven off the road by armed assailants. The driver was subsequently robbed of his belongings before one of the suspects made off with the stolen truck.
Fortunately, the swift response of the authorities led to the arrest of a 45-year-old suspect. The suspect is expected to appear in court on Monday, facing charges of hijacking.

Donald Mdluli, spokesperson for Mpumalanga police, stated that the incident was promptly escalated to the security cluster, resulting in the identification of the stolen truck as it entered Standerton.
Efforts were made to apprehend the suspect, but he resisted arrest and collided with a security vehicle from behind. Despite this, the authorities were successful in apprehending the suspect and recovering the stolen vehicle.
The recovery of over 20 stolen vehicles in Mpumalanga demonstrates the commitment of the police force to combatting vehicle theft and ensuring the safety of the community.
