Amnesty International has called on Israel to adhere to the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) ruling, which orders the country to take necessary actions to prevent genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

While the ICJ’s judgment did not explicitly call for a ceasefire, it did mandate Israel to promptly and effectively facilitate the provision of essential services and humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.

Agnes Callamard, the secretary-general of Amnesty International, emphasized the significance of The Hague’s decision to issue provisional measures in response to South Africa’s genocide case against Israel.

She believes that this step could potentially protect the Palestinian population in Gaza from further suffering and irreparable harm. Callamard stated, “Today’s decision serves as a powerful reminder of the crucial role of international law in preventing genocide and safeguarding the rights of victims of atrocity crimes.”

While acknowledging the importance of the ICJ ruling, Callamard also emphasized that it alone cannot put an end to the atrocities and devastation being witnessed in Gaza. She expressed deep concern over the alarming signs of genocide in the region and Israel’s blatant disregard for international law.

Callamard stressed the urgent need for effective and unified pressure on Israel to halt its ruthless military campaign, which has resulted in death, horror, and immense suffering for Palestinians on an unprecedented scale.

The ICJ’s ruling comes in response to South Africa’s appeal to the World Court, seeking various orders against Israel. These include an immediate suspension of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, an end to forced displacement, the facilitation of humanitarian access for displaced Palestinians, and the preservation of evidence.

The court’s decision reflects the international community’s growing recognition of the need to address the dire situation in Gaza and hold Israel accountable for its actions.

In parallel to these developments, several key donor countries to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees have announced a suspension of their funding.

This decision follows Israel’s accusations that several UNRWA staff members were involved in a Hamas attack on October 7th. UNRWA has responded by stating that it has terminated the employment of several staff members in response to Israel’s allegations.

The agency has also pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the claims, which were not specified by Israel. In response, Israel has threatened to cease UNRWA’s operations in Gaza after the conflict.

However, the Norwegian government has called for a distinction between the actions of individuals and the overall work of UNRWA. They recognize the crucial role played by tens of thousands of UNRWA employees in Gaza, the West Bank, and the region in distributing aid, saving lives, and safeguarding basic needs and rights.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, and the ICJ’s ruling serves as a reminder of the urgent need for international intervention to protect the lives and rights of Palestinians.

The international community must continue to exert pressure on Israel to halt its military campaign and work towards a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals involved. Only through unified efforts can we hope to bring an end to the suffering and devastation being experienced by the people of Gaza.
