A shocking incident occurred at Glenvista High School in Johannesburg on Thursday when a teacher and a grade 9 learner were involved in a violent fistfight. The incident was captured on video and went viral on social media the following morning.

The video footage shows the teacher throwing punches at the learner, while the learner retaliates by throwing a chair. Another learner is also seen throwing a desk in the chaos that ensued.

“The educator and the grade 9 learner from Glenvista High School in Johannesburg were seen fighting in the classroom. The incident took place on Thursday, and a video capturing the violent altercation and the damage to school furniture was shared widely,” said MEC Chiloane.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) regards this incident as a serious matter and has emphasized that the safety of everyone on school premises is their top priority. They have stated that such ill-discipline will not be tolerated, as schools are meant for development and not for any form of misconduct.

“We are taking this matter seriously, and we will act decisively based on our findings. The investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding this incident, and appropriate actions will be taken,” added MEC Chiloane.

As a result of the incident, classes at Glenvista High School had to be postponed on Friday. The school management arranged a meeting with the parents, teacher, and the learner involved in the altercation to address the situation and find a resolution.

It is crucial for all parties involved to come together and discuss the incident openly and honestly. The meeting will provide an opportunity to understand the underlying causes of the altercation and to find ways to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The school management, in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Education, will work towards creating a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
