Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has taken a jab at African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula for his recent remarks that have caused a stir within the ruling party.

Mbalula stirred controversy last weekend when he implied that members of the ruling party had lied about former president Jacob Zuma’s swimming pool being a “fire pool.”

Mbalula’s comments drew criticism from South Africans and fellow party members, including ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe and former police minister Nathi Nhleko.

While Mantashe suggested that Mbalula got carried away by the cameras and said things he shouldn’t have, Nhleko dismissed the remarks as “rubbish” and denied any lies were told.

In response to the backlash, Mbalula clarified his statement, explaining that he meant to say the ruling party defended Zuma until the Constitutional Court ruled that “enormous state resources were misappropriated to achieve the renovations in Nkandla.”

He argued that only members of opposition parties and sworn enemies of the ANC would interpret his comments as an admission of lies, suggesting that anyone else should have their “head checked.”

Both the EFF and Mmusi Maimane’s Build One SA have responded to Mbalula’s revelations. Maimane has called for a reinvestigation of the Nkandla matter, while Malema has emphasized the need to give Mbalula enough time to speak at the event to disclose more revelations.

The ongoing controversy surrounding Mbalula’s remarks highlights the internal divisions within the ANC and the political landscape of South Africa. It also raises questions about the transparency and accountability of the ruling party.

While Mbalula’s clarification attempts to downplay the significance of his comments, the fact that they sparked such a strong reaction suggests that there may be deeper issues within the ANC.

The party’s credibility has been undermined by a series of corruption scandals and allegations of mismanagement, and Mbalula’s remarks only serve to fuel the perception of dishonesty and cover-up.

The call for a reinvestigation of the Nkandla matter by Maimane and the EFF reflects the broader public sentiment that the truth needs to be uncovered and those responsible held accountable.

The Nkandla scandal, which involved the use of public funds for the renovation of Zuma’s private residence, has long been a symbol of the ANC’s failure to address corruption and ensure good governance.

Malema’s demand for Mbalula to be given enough time to speak at the event indicates a desire for transparency and openness within the ruling party. It suggests that there may be more revelations to come and that the ANC should not shy away from addressing the issues at hand.

Only through transparency, accountability, and a commitment to good governance can the ANC hope to regain the trust of the South African people. The ongoing controversy serves as a reminder that the party’s future depends on its ability to address these issues and restore its reputation.
