A suspected illegal mining kingpin has been killed during a shootout with police in Carletonville.
Officers conducted an operation at a property where the suspect was believed to be staying on Sunday.
Police said they identified themselves, but the man allegedly responded by pointing an AK-47 assault rifle at them.
