The summit’s emphasis on enhancing SAPS capabilities comes at a critical time, with many South Africans questioning whether the police are adequately equipped to deal with the escalating crime wave.

The discussions will provide a platform for solutions and reforms aimed at revitalizing the service to better protect communities.

Policing Union Calls for Increased Resources and Protection for Officers

Lesiba Thobakgale, spokesperson for the South African Policing Union (SAPU), outlined the challenges that must be addressed during the summit. “If you still have an under-resourced service like SAPS, starting from human capital to physical resources, it really becomes difficult to win against crime,” he said.

Thobakgale highlighted the decline in SAPS personnel since 2010, despite South Africa’s growing population, stressing that the force’s capacity must be strengthened to ensure effective crime prevention.

Another critical issue is the alarming number of police killings, which has been a rising concern in recent years. Thobakgale called for urgent action to safeguard police officers, saying, “We need to have a solution for police killings because we need to make sure that we protect our protectors.”

The summit will undoubtedly need to address these pressing issues to provide a comprehensive solution for South Africa’s policing challenges.
