During the emotional funeral of Nokuphila Mbhele in Umzumbe on Saturday, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli made a powerful appeal for political parties to shift their focus from election campaigns to addressing the growing crisis of gender-based violence (GBV) in the province.

Mbhele’s tragic death, allegedly at the hands of her lover, added to the increasing toll of GBV-related fatalities. The suspect also reportedly attempted to take his own life after the incident.

The funeral came just days after the brutal killings of three women on the KZN South Coast—Nokuphila Mbhele, Nandipha Lifana, and Nangamso Lifana. All victims were allegedly murdered by people known to them.

Premier Ntuli pointed to these killings as part of a disturbing trend that demands immediate action.

“It is obvious that there is a problem, and it is huge. It requires everyone’s attention,” he said, urging leaders across all sectors to take a more active role in combating GBV.

A Call to Action: Political Leaders Must Take the Lead

Ntuli emphasized the importance of political leaders stepping up in the fight against GBV, urging them to channel the same energy they apply during election campaigns into the battle against violence.

“These killings of innocent souls must really stop,” Ntuli stated. However, he stressed that the fight against GBV would only succeed if every individual in the province plays an active role in supporting the cause.

The premier’s passionate speech at the funeral resonated with the attendees, particularly political leaders, who were urged to act with urgency and dedication in the ongoing fight to protect women and children from harm.
