The rape of a seven-year-old girl in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, has sparked outrage as the investigation faces setbacks and legal challenges.

The child was allegedly assaulted on school grounds in October. Still, the case took a controversial turn when the school principal refused to provide a DNA sample, enlisting AfriForum to contest the police request.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu confirmed that DNA testing is now underway for three persons of interest, with results expected soon. However, initial forensic tests revealed no foreign DNA in the victim’s system, complicating the search for justice.

No Witnesses, No Clear Evidence: A Challenging Investigation

Minister Mchunu emphasized the difficulties in solving the case, stating, “This is a case without witnesses, and it’s a case involving a minor. It’s a case where DNA, crucial as it may be, wouldn’t be comprehensive.”

With no direct evidence and the principal’s resistance to cooperating, authorities have had to rely on advanced forensic analysis to identify potential suspects. The three individuals now under scrutiny were flagged during further investigative work, raising hopes for a breakthrough.

Justice Awaits: What’s Next in the Case?

As the nation watches closely, the pending DNA results could determine whether charges will be filed. The case has highlighted systemic challenges in handling crimes against children, particularly in rural areas where evidence collection can be fraught with obstacles.

Community members and activists continue to demand accountability, stressing that the victim and her family deserve closure. With pressure mounting, authorities are under scrutiny to deliver a thorough and transparent investigation, regardless of the hurdles.

“We are doing everything possible to ensure justice is served,” Mchunu assured, but the clock is ticking for answers in this heart-wrenching case.
