A much-anticipated march in support of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, ‘Hands Off Mkhwanazi’ was unexpectedly cancelled this morning.
The “Hands off Mkhwanazi” demonstration was set to take place in Durban, with scores of participants expected, including members of civil society, business leaders, and representatives from various unions.
Organisers have not provided any official reason for the sudden cancellation, leaving supporters and observers speculating.

The march was originally organised in response to an ongoing investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
An anonymous complaint alleges that Commissioner Mkhwanazi interfered in a case involving a prison official in the province. While the full details of the allegations remain unclear, the complaint has sparked public debate and divided opinion.
Mkhwanazi, however, has been vocal about developments in the investigation.

Speaking to the media, Mkhwanazi revealed that IPID had withdrawn its initial request for a response to the anonymous allegations.
“IPID wrote me the withdrawal letter two weeks ago,” he confirmed, adding that the watchdog never clarified whether the investigation itself had also been dropped.
The lack of transparency has added further uncertainty to the situation, especially among supporters prepared to march in solidarity with the commissioner.
