The town of George in South Africa is reeling from a devastating building collapse that has resulted in the loss of five lives. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon when a building under construction on Victoria Street suddenly crumbled, trapping 49 construction workers under the rubble.

Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene and have managed to rescue 26 workers so far. These individuals have been transported to the hospital, with 11 of them in serious condition.

However, the search and rescue operation continues as teams work tirelessly to locate and save the remaining trapped workers.

Three teams of rescue personnel are currently focusing their efforts on different areas within the site of the collapsed building.

The George Municipality, along with multiple disaster service personnel, including SAPS search and rescue teams, sniffer dogs, and emergency teams from the City of Cape Town and Breede Valley Local Municipality, have joined forces to support the rescue operation.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has confirmed that over 100 emergency and other personnel are on-site, working tirelessly to bring relief to those affected by this tragic event.

The George Municipality is providing support and assistance to the families and friends of the construction workers involved in the incident.

They have designated the foyer of the main municipal building as a gathering space for these individuals, where they will be aided by social workers from the Department of Social Services and Correctional Services.

Executive Mayor Leon van Wyk expressed his heartfelt condolences on behalf of the George Council and the municipal administration to the families and colleagues of the deceased.

He acknowledged the anguish and uncertainty experienced by those waiting for news of their loved ones, emphasizing that their thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

The George community has rallied together to provide support to the emergency services personnel working tirelessly at the site.

Members of the public who wish to contribute drinking water, Lucozade, wine gums, or any food for the rescue teams can deliver these items to the tent site via Ivy Street at 79 Victoria Street.
