The George building collapse has been described as one of the most tragic events to hit the city in the Western Cape as hope hangs in the air following emergency personnel working to rescue trapped construction workers.

The collapse of a building has left four people dead, with 24 rescued and taken to the hospital. Sadly, 10 of the injured are in serious condition.

The families and friends of the construction workers involved in the incident are being provided with a space to gather in the foyer of the main municipal building.

The Department of Social Services and Correctional Services social workers are offering their support and assistance to those affected.

As a safety precaution, the municipal building, which is located opposite the scene of the tragedy, was closed on Monday. Roads leading to the building and the collapse site have also been closed.

The magnitude of the George building collapse has prompted multiple disaster service personnel to join the rescue efforts.

SAPS search and rescue teams, along with sniffer dogs, as well as emergency teams from the City of Cape Town and Breede Valley Local Municipality, have come together to assist in the rescue operations.

These teams have been divided into three groups, each tasked with searching a separate area.

Marais Kruger, MMC for Community Safety, expressed his gratitude towards the army of rescuers and volunteers who swiftly responded to the scene.

He commended the efforts of the volunteers who have been helping to clear debris and the construction workers who have selflessly provided their equipment. The spirit of unity and compassion displayed by the community has been truly remarkable.

Executive Mayor Leon Van Wyk has also appealed for support from the public. Those who wish to contribute drinking water, Lucozade, wine gums, or any food for the emergency service personnel can deliver them to the tent site located at 79 Victoria Street, Delplan Consulting, via Ivy Street.
