The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has suspended lectures following student protests over several concerns. Students have raised issues including worsening residence conditions, withheld academic transcripts, historical debt and the university’s new admissions fee.
They have handed management a second memorandum outlining their demands and vowed that lectures will not resume until their concerns are addressed.

The memorandum was issued and signed at CPUT’s Bellville campus following several days of mass meetings and protests. The action followed an SRC mass meeting last Friday, where students claimed management had failed to respond to an earlier memorandum.

The institution’s spokesperson Lauren Kansley said, “The CPUT Executive Management availed themselves to receive the Memorandum of Grievances from students who have been staging various protest actions across our campuses.”
Kansley said a student was taken to hospital after suffering an asthma attack during one of the mobilisation attempts. She also said a senior female member of the security team was rushed to hospital after a brick was thrown at her.
