Some Cape Town residents who joined a march against illegal immigration say they are increasingly frustrated with what they describe as the government’s weak response to undocumented foreign nationals.
Approximately 300 demonstrators from several civic organisations and local communities marched through Bellville to the Parow police station on Saturday.
The protesters are calling on government to tighten immigration laws, strengthen border and passport controls, and take firmer action against companies employing undocumented foreign nationals.

Organisers of the march also urged authorities to intensify efforts against illegal immigration and conduct raids on buildings allegedly occupied by undocumented migrants.
Residents who took part in the demonstration argued that South African businesses should prioritise employing local citizens before turning to foreign nationals for jobs.
The march formed part of growing public pressure on authorities to address concerns around unemployment, border security and immigration enforcement.

One demonstrator, Jeandre Peter, said protests of this nature would not be necessary if existing laws were properly enforced.
“I want the authorities to do their own jobs and follow the law that our government has set, that’s all we want.

“Once that happens employment will help itself, the grant dependency will sort itself out, all these things will self-correct if we could just get the government to follow their own laws,” said Peter.
Demonstrators said they intend to continue placing pressure on authorities to act against illegal immigration.
