Alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi is expected to find out on Thursday whether he will be granted bail after the State opposed his release application.

Mogotsi appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Monday for his formal bail hearing following his arrest linked to an alleged staged assassination attempt in Vosloorus last November.

He faces charges of perjury, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and discharging a firearm in a public space.

State Opposes Brown Mogotsi Bail Application

During proceedings, prosecutors argued that Mogotsi should remain behind bars, claiming he had not cooperated fully with investigators.

The State alleged that Mogotsi provided investigating officers with an incorrect residential address and failed to disclose all of his previous convictions.

Prosecutors also accused him of attempting to bribe the investigating officer handling the matter.

State prosecutor Thami Mpekana told the court that granting Mogotsi bail would not be in the interests of justice because of the allegations against him.

When Mogotsi first appeared in court last week, the State had not indicated that it intended to oppose bail.

Defence Says Claims Are Result Of Misunderstandings

Mogotsi’s legal representative, William Sekgatja, rejected the allegations raised by the prosecution, describing them as honest misunderstandings between his client and police investigators.

Sekgatja argued that the issues raised by the State should not prevent Mogotsi from being released on bail.

The Times Post learned that the court is expected to deliver its ruling on Thursday after Mogotsi spent nearly 10 days in custody.
