After being dumped by Gagasi FM, comedian Sandile “Flymotion” Makhanya has taken matters into his own hands and started a podcast called “The Basement”.
Makhanya, who was previously part of the Gagasi FM breakfast crew, had his contract not renewed by the station, leading him to venture into the world of podcasting.
This week, social media was buzzing with the news of Flymotion’s podcast. In an interview, he explained his motivation behind starting “The Basement”: “KwaZulu-Natal artists don’t have a prominent platform, everything is done in Johannesburg.

“I want to break that and give other people a voice to express themselves in this podcast. It’s soon going to be the biggest-watched podcast in the province.”
“The Basement” aims to tackle a wide range of subject matters regarding social issues while also creating a platform for up-and-coming artists.
Flymotion intends to share his personal views on various topics, including daily life, politics, social issues, and the creative industry. Additionally, the podcast will focus on promoting local talent and feature celebrity interviews.
Earlier this year, Flymotion found himself at odds with his former bosses at Gagasi FM after raising station issues on his social media pages.
When asked if starting the podcast was a result of his contract not being renewed, Flymotion responded, “I’m not bitter, but I had a bad experience on radio. So, I’m doing this because of that bad experience.”
“The Basement” has aspirations of capturing a large audience and providing entertainment on a global scale. Flymotion has partnered with Movies Media Studios in the Sails, Durban Point, who are supporting his dream.
Despite the challenges that come with any business venture, Flymotion remains optimistic: “Challenges are everywhere, but we overcome them. We welcome anyone who’s got something to say or promote. I’m the host.”
With his new podcast, Flymotion is determined to give a voice to the artists and individuals of KwaZulu-Natal who may have previously been overlooked.
By addressing social issues, promoting local talent, and sharing his personal views, he hopes to create a platform that resonates with a wide audience. “The Basement” is set to become a must-watch podcast in the province and beyond.
