Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, has sadly passed away at the age of 43 after a long and fierce battle with cancer.
Her untimely death occurred just one day before her grandmother’s 87th birthday, adding an extra layer of sorrow to this already devastating loss.
Zoleka had been admitted to the hospital on 18 September for ongoing treatment for cancer that had spread to various parts of her body, including her hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord.

Recent scans had shown significant disease progression, with the presence of lung fibrosis and multiple blood clots. Surrounded by her loved ones, Zoleka fought bravely until the end.
Her determination and resilience in the face of such a debilitating illness were truly inspiring. Despite enduring her third bout of cancer, which she publicly announced in August last year, Zoleka remained a beacon of strength, hope, and advocacy.
As the granddaughter of two anti-apartheid heroes, Zoleka inherited a legacy of courage and activism. She channeled her family’s commitment to justice and equality in her own fight against cancer, using her platform to raise awareness and support for others facing similar challenges.
Zoleka’s impact extended beyond her famous lineage. She touched the lives of many through her candid and powerful storytelling, sharing her personal struggles and triumphs with honesty and vulnerability.
Her openness about her journey with cancer helped break down the stigma surrounding the disease and encouraged others to seek early detection and treatment.
Today, we remember Zoleka Mandela not only as a granddaughter of icons but also as a fearless advocate for cancer awareness. Her legacy will continue to inspire and empower countless individuals in their own battles against this devastating illness.
