The Government of National Unity (GNU) has received a failing assessment from ActionSA, with the opposition party arguing that the coalition government has underperformed across key areas of governance since its establishment in 2024.
Addressing the media on Thursday, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba and six Members of Parliament presented the party’s review of the GNU, which was formed by 10 political parties led by the African National Congress (ANC).
According to ActionSA, the administration has fallen short on several critical measures, including ethical leadership, economic performance, law enforcement and the delivery of basic services.
ActionSA Criticises GNU Leadership And Service Delivery
The party maintained that the GNU has not met expectations in governing the country and delivering results for citizens.
ActionSA also highlighted its role in Parliament, describing itself as the most effective opposition force despite holding just over 1% of the seats in the National Assembly.
The party said it has submitted more questions to the executive than any other political party represented in Parliament, arguing that this demonstrates its commitment to holding the government accountable.
In its assessment of the GNU’s own performance indicators, ActionSA said the administration has consistently failed to achieve satisfactory outcomes in several areas, including service delivery.
GNU Scores Poorly On Ethics, Safety And Accountability
ActionSA parliamentary leader Athol Trollip said weak leadership has become a defining characteristic of the GNU.
“After another year of waste, excuses and declining accountability, the GNU is evaluated at an F for failure in this ethical leadership and public service.”
Trollip added that the party had awarded the administration an “E” grade for its handling of law, order and public safety.

Mashaba, however, suggested that the score was too generous.
“I’m sure you’ve used date to give this, but for me, from outside, I think you were generous. I would have given them an ‘H’.”
The remarks form part of ActionSA’s broader criticism of the GNU as it approaches two years in office, with the party arguing that the coalition has failed to deliver meaningful progress in several key sectors.
