The case against suspended Julius Mkhwanazi and Kagiso Lerutla has been postponed to June after the matter was transferred to the Regional Court.

Mkhwanazi, the suspended deputy chief of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), and Lerutla, the City Manager of City of Ekurhuleni, made a brief appearance in the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The two are facing charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice linked to an incident dating back to 2019.

Julius Mkhwanazi And Kagiso Lerutla Arrested In April

The pair were arrested in April after allegations that they worked together to arrange for another person to impersonate Lerutla in court following a speeding-related arrest.

Both accused were granted bail of R30,000 each.

Boksburg Court Transfers Matter To Regional Court

Lerutla’s attorney, Alphy Masenya, said the defence team has yet to receive the case docket.

The matter is expected to return to court in June, when proceedings will continue in the Regional Court.
