Minister of International Relations Ronald Lamola has called for restraint and measured engagement among African countries as tensions surrounding illegal immigration continue to dominate discussions across the continent.

Speaking at a public symposium on Monday, Lamola cautioned political leaders against exploiting migration-related protests for populist gain aimed at domestic audiences. He stressed the importance of responsible dialogue at a time when immigration debates are becoming increasingly politically charged.

The symposium, held under the theme “South Africa’s foreign policy in an era of global fragmentation”, focused on trade, geopolitics and international law. Lamola used the platform to address challenges linked to migration and the need for African nations to cooperate constructively as the continent marked Africa Day.

Ronald Lamola Warns Against Populist Immigration Narratives

Lamola said migration discussions should not be driven by political point-scoring or rhetoric designed to inflame divisions within African societies.

According to the minister, irresponsible engagement on the issue risked deepening tensions and creating a more polarised environment across the continent.

He called for diplomacy rooted in facts and evidence rather than emotionally charged narratives.

“So, we need restraint, we need sober engagements, we need to be informed by data, by evidence and by statistics, including the various protocols that we have signed to respond to this economic reality of our continent.”

Lamola also appealed for leadership that rejects disinformation and prioritises credible information when dealing with immigration concerns.

He said African countries needed to work together in a responsible manner that avoids fuelling hostility and division during an already sensitive period.

Lamola’s remarks come amid growing debates around illegal immigration and the economic pressures facing several countries across Africa.
