Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the steady flow of people relocating to the city reflects growing confidence in the Democratic Alliance’s ability to govern effectively.

Speaking on Monday while putting up the party’s first voter registration posters in the CBD, Hill-Lewis said around 100,000 families had moved to Cape Town over the past three years in search of better services and opportunities.

However, he stressed that newcomers needed to register to vote in Cape Town if they wanted to help maintain the DA’s leadership in the metro. The Times Post reports that the mayor also cautioned against complacency despite the party’s long-standing control of the city.

“It doesn’t matter how much we’ve done, how much we’ve got right, we can never rest on our laurels. We can never be comfortable that just because we’ve done a good job over the last four and a half years, people are automatically going to vote for us. We have work to do.”

DA Launches Cape Town Voter Registration Campaign

Hill-Lewis said the DA remained focused on campaigning ahead of the next election, even after governing Cape Town for nearly two decades.

The mayor said the party’s campaign would centre on keeping Cape Town functioning effectively while also pushing to expand the DA’s influence nationally.

“Let us work harder than we’ve ever worked before to make sure that we can take Cape Town forward for everyone, that we can keep Cape Town working for everyone, not just here, but across the country, that we can make this an historic election for the DA.”

Cape Town Semigration Boosts Focus On Voter Registration

DA Cape Town metro chairperson JP Smith said the party’s immediate challenge was ensuring that residents who had relocated from other municipalities updated their voter registration details.

“Many of them are people who’ve left other municipalities and have been part of this very sustained semi-gration to Cape Town, and so out there sit in many communities a whole lot of people who have not yet voted.”

Smith said many new residents had not yet participated in local elections in Cape Town, making voter registration a priority for the party’s campaign machinery.
