Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Velenkosini Hlabisa, is making bold moves to unify the Khoi-San community, which has been plagued by divisions for many years.
In a concerted effort to resolve long-standing issues, Hlabisa is convening a three-day national convention of Khoi-San leaders in Boksburg, Johannesburg.
The Khoi-San community, made up of diverse groups and factions, has struggled with internal divisions, particularly regarding leadership and recognition.

Hlabisa hopes this convention will address these challenges head-on and pave the way for a unified approach to representing the Khoi-San people.
Addressing Leadership Disputes Within the Khoi-San Community
One of the core issues Hlabisa aims to tackle at the convention is the ongoing conflict over leadership within the Khoi-San community. With five distinct stems, each containing multiple groups, it’s no surprise that disagreements have surfaced over who should lead.
“We’ve seen leaders from different factions claim authority over the entire community,” Hlabisa explained. “Some believe that others don’t represent them adequately, which has led to significant fragmentation. But I believe we’ve crossed that bridge, and now is the time to work together.”
A Unified Voice for the Khoi-San: The Path Forward
Hlabisa’s ultimate goal for the convention is to forge a single, unified voice for the Khoi-San community. He emphasized that this voice will not only help unify the people but will also ensure the preservation and sharing of the community’s rich history.
“This is an opportunity for us to find one voice—one that will reflect the strength and unity of the Khoi-San people, and ensure that their stories are told for generations to come,” Hlabisa said.
