During a security cluster briefing on Sunday, Minister of Police Bheki Cele provided an update on the progress made by task teams established to investigate political killings. The briefing also addressed the state of readiness ahead of the upcoming elections.
Recently, two ward councillors were tragically killed in Rustenburg and Mpumalanga. In the Rustenburg case, the victim was walking home with her cousin when unknown assailants followed her and opened fire.
Minister Cele highlighted the successes achieved in convicting individuals accused of political murders, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal.

He stated, “Almost 338 people have been arrested in the province, with 18 of them receiving life sentences and 36 receiving sentences ranging from 10 to 73 years.”
The establishment of task teams dedicated to investigating political killings has proven to be effective in bringing perpetrators to justice.
While progress has been made in some cases, it is important to continue these efforts to ensure the safety and security of political figures and the general public.
The commitment to addressing political violence and ensuring a peaceful electoral process is crucial for the stability and democratic functioning of the country.
The government’s efforts to tackle this issue are commendable, and it is hoped that the task teams will continue to make progress in resolving outstanding cases and preventing future acts of violence.
As the elections draw near, all necessary measures must be taken to maintain law and order, protect candidates, and provide a safe environment for voters to exercise their democratic rights.
