A Noordvaal Cup rugby fixture between Hoërskool Menlopark and Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday after a mass altercation involving players and parents forced officials to abandon the match.
The highly anticipated Beker-afdeling encounter was called off with Menlopark holding a commanding 36–5 lead after disorder broke out on the field.
Footage of the incident spread rapidly across social media, prompting widespread condemnation from rugby supporters, former players and followers of school sport.

Noordvaal Schools Rugby Association Launches Investigation
The Noordvaal Schools Rugby Association has confirmed it will investigate the incident and has requested reports from both schools before deciding on any further action.
Association chair Tinus Diedericks urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation is under way.

“I ask everyone to refrain from any further comments regarding the incident. On behalf of the Noordvaal committee, I assure everyone that we do not condone any such behaviour,” said Diedericks.
He added that disciplinary processes would follow once the necessary information had been gathered.
“There will be an investigation — we have already asked for reports from both schools. The necessary steps will be taken — if not by us but certainly by each of the schools,” said Diedericks.
School Rugby Brawl Sparks Calls For Tough Sanctions
The incident has reignited discussion around conduct at school sporting events, particularly the behaviour of spectators and parents on the sidelines.
Former Springbok Kobus Wiese called for strict punishment for anyone found to have been involved.
“Both schools should be forced to ban guilty parents, administrators and players for life if evidence shows they were involved or participated in this bizarre incident. This is part of the problem in schools, problem parents,” Wiese wrote on X.
Several social media users echoed those views.
Facebook user Rudi van der Westhuizen commented: “Suspend both schools for their misconduct. We don’t need this in the Noordvaal Cup.”
Johannes Tolmay wrote on X: “It looks more like unhappy parents and kids in a sport they don’t belong in. Ban the originator and that team from school rugby. It’s supposed to be fun.”
Others attempted to attribute responsibility to one of the schools involved.
Gary Coetsee alleged on X that similar incidents had occurred before, writing:
“It’s EG Jansen and their parents starting this every time. Did it at HS Nelspruit as well. One of their players attacked a coach by the throat while they shook hands after the game they lost. Then EG Jansen fathers attacked. Disgusting! What ethos are they promoting?”
These allegations have not been independently verified.
Menlopark And Dr EG Jansen Among South Africa’s Top School Rugby Teams
The fixture featured two of South Africa’s most respected school rugby programmes.
Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen, based in Boksburg, has built a reputation as one of the country’s leading rugby schools. Known for its physical style of play, the school has produced several professional players, including Hendré Stassen, Louis Ludik, Francois Uys, Kevin Buys, Ginter Smuts and Erich Cronje. It has also consistently contributed players to the Craven Week and SA Schools teams.
EG Jansen entered the weekend’s match in seventh place on the Noordvaal Cup standings after finishing sixth overall in the 2025 season.
Menlopark, from Pretoria East, is another established powerhouse in schoolboy rugby. The school won the prestigious Virseker Beker in 2019 and is recognised for its attacking style and strong player development system.
The Pretoria side arrived at the fixture after an entertaining 45–42 victory over Noordheuwel and appeared on course for another important win before the match was abandoned. Menlopark currently occupies sixth place on the Noordvaal Cup log.
