A dedicated multidisciplinary team, consisting of the Police’s Victim Identification Unit, the Biology Section of the Forensic Science Laboratory Unit, Forensic Pathology Services, and their counterparts from Botswana, worked tirelessly to recover and positively identify the human remains through the DNA process,” stated Thilivhali Muavha, the spokesperson for the MEC.

The process of identifying the remains has been a long and emotionally challenging journey for the team. However, they find solace in the fact that the families affected by this tragedy will finally be able to find closure.

The severity of the bus crash prompted visits from both Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In mid-April, the two leaders visited the crash scene to offer their condolences and support to the affected families. Their presence highlighted the importance of solidarity and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries during times of crisis.
