The disciplinary hearing against suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been expanded to include another charge relating to the alleged fitting of blue emergency lights to private vehicles.
Mkhwanazi, who has been suspended from his position, is facing several allegations of misconduct, alongside separate criminal cases before different courts.
The latest disciplinary charge relates to allegations that Mkhwanazi unlawfully approved the installation of blue emergency lights on four private vehicles belonging to alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Malala.
The development adds another layer to an already lengthy disciplinary process against the senior police officer.
Julius Mkhwanazi Faces Fresh Blue Lights Allegation
The City of Ekurhuleni has added a charge alleging that Mkhwanazi was involved in fitting blue emergency lights to vehicles linked to Malala.
The new allegation is separate from another charge in which Mkhwanazi is accused of signing a fraudulent memorandum of understanding that allegedly gave Malala access to blue emergency lights.

The latest charge is understood to be linked to Mkhwanazi’s fifth criminal case.
