Lisa Koppel, the wife of musician and businessperson Danny K, has died at the age of 41 after battling colorectal cancer. Koppel, a lawyer and mother of three, was diagnosed with the illness in November 2023. She died on Sunday, according to a statement issued by her family.
Her husband paid tribute to her on Tuesday, describing the loss as devastating for their family and those who knew her. The couple married in 2012 and have three children together. “I have lost the wife I worshipped, our three children have lost an extraordinary mother, and her family and friends have lost someone they deeply loved,” Danny K said.
Koppel kept her diagnosis private while undergoing treatment. Danny K said she did not want pity, attention or sympathy and instead focused on protecting their children.
Lisa Koppel’s Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis And Treatment
Koppel was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November 2023. Danny K said she and her family explored treatment options in South Africa and abroad in an effort to find a way to save her. Despite their efforts, she ultimately died on Sunday.
“From that moment, she fought with extraordinary strength and determination. Together with her family, she searched for hope in South Africa and around the world, pursuing every treatment and every opportunity available to her. Tragically, despite everything, she could not be saved.”
According to her husband, Koppel wanted to shield her children from the impact of her illness for as long as possible. He said she chose not to make her diagnosis public because she wanted to protect their happiness and innocence.
“Above all, she wanted to protect her children and preserve their happiness and innocence for as long as possible,” he shared.
Family Shares Lisa Koppel’s Cancer Diagnosis For Awareness
The Gundelfinger and Koppel families have now decided to speak publicly about her diagnosis in an effort to raise awareness about colorectal cancer. In a statement shared via Instagram, the families said Koppel remained gentle, humble and brave throughout her illness.
“Even through the hardest moments, she remained gentle, humble and remarkably brave, inspiring everyone who walked this journey beside her.”
The family also highlighted changes in colorectal cancer screening recommendations and urged people with persistent symptoms to seek medical attention.
“Colorectal cancer screening was traditionally recommended from age 50, but the disease is increasingly affecting younger people. Today, international guidelines recommend routine screening from age 45 for people at average risk. Persistent symptoms should always be discussed with a doctor and properly investigated.

“Lisa hoped that one day she would use her experience to raise awareness of this disease and help others through early detection. She never got that opportunity. Her family will now carry that purpose forward in her name. The Koppel and Gundelfinger families have been left shattered.”

Danny K said Lisa’s illness should not be what defines her memory. Instead, he said she should be remembered for how she treated and loved the people around her.
“With kindness, humility, courage and an unwavering devotion to the people who meant everything to her.”
The families expressed their gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for Koppel during her illness. They have also asked for prayers, compassion and privacy as they mourn her death.
