The Democratic Alliance (DA), a South African political party, has recently raised concerns about the security of the upcoming Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In a letter addressed to the International Cricket Council (ICC), the DA has requested an investigation into claims that the tournament is under threat.

The party’s concerns have been further heightened by the decision to remove David Teeger, who is Jewish, from the captaincy of the South African team. The Cricket South Africa (CSA) has clarified that Teeger’s removal as captain was not influenced by his views on Israel’s war on Gaza.

Instead, CSA cited the potential disruptions that could arise from protests during the tournament as the reason for their decision. The World Cup is scheduled to commence on Friday and will be hosted at various venues across the country.

Veronica van Dyk, a Member of Parliament from the DA, has expressed skepticism regarding CSA’s justifications and has questioned the accuracy of their security information.

Seeking clarification, van Dyk wants to know if CSA has informed the ICC about these alleged threats and whether other member states are aware of them. Additionally, she has raised concerns about the overall safety of hosting the tournament.

The DA strongly believes that CSA succumbed to political pressure from the African National Congress (ANC) in relieving Teeger of his captaincy.

Van Dyk has called on the ICC to investigate any political interference by the ANC government in international cricket, emphasizing that such interference is strictly prohibited.

The party also demands that CSA members involved in the decision-making process step down from their positions. The DA’s letter to the ICC highlights the need for transparency and accountability in cricket administration.

It raises important questions about the integrity of the decision-making process within CSA and the potential influence of political agendas. The party seeks reassurance that the tournament will proceed without compromising the safety of players, officials, and spectators.
