Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela Warns Against Voting For Corrupt Politicians Like Zuma

Madonsela further argues that allowing Zuma to regain power would violate the principle of the separation of powers. She drew a parallel between this situation and a time under apartheid when parliament created a higher code of parliament to overrule the Supreme Court of South Africa.

As South Africa prepares for the national and provincial elections scheduled for 29 May, former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has issued a stark warning to the country.

Madonsela cautions against voting for corrupt politicians, specifically highlighting the potential return of former President Jacob Zuma to public office. She asserts that such a decision would lead to the total collapse of South Africa.

Madonsela, who served as the Public Protector from 2009 to 2016, believes that bringing back politicians with a history of corruption would have dire consequences for the country.

In an interview with eNCA, she expressed her shock at the possibility of Zuma’s return, stating, “For me, it sounds bizarre as somebody who was in the ANC and knowing that MK is not owned by any person.

Just from an ethics point of view, I’m shocked by President Zuma, I’m also shocked by the decision of the IEC to decide that if a court of law decided that his sentence is 15 months by the remission of sentence, the president has not overruled a court of law and his sentence is shorter.”

Madonsela further argues that allowing Zuma to regain power would violate the principle of the separation of powers. She drew a parallel between this situation and a time under apartheid when parliament created a higher code of parliament to overrule the Supreme Court of South Africa.

According to Madonsela, South Africans should not forget that Zuma has refused to obey the constitution and has been implicated in selling the country to the Gupta family while repurposing state entities for personal gain.

“The people of South Africa should not forget that because if he does come back into power, he will do just that, he will finish that job,” Thuli Madonsela warns.

Unsurprisingly, Madonsela’s comments have drawn criticism from Zuma’s supporters. The MK Party accuses her of targeting Zuma and tarnishing his reputation.

They reference the investigations into Zuma’s Nkandla homestead and the incomplete state capture report as examples of her alleged bias. The party dismisses Madonsela’s claims of Zuma selling the country to the Guptas, labelling her a liar and a product of white capitalist media.

Earlier this month, Zuma addressed his supporters outside the electoral court, emphasizing that he had unfinished matters from his time in office.

He expressed his confusion over the limitation of presidents to two terms and stated that he had unfinished business in the presidential office. Zuma believes that no one can stop him if the people want him to serve.
