The recent remarks made by ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula at an ANC cadre meeting stating that former President Jacob Zuma had “expelled himself” from the party have been clarified by the MK party.

According to the MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela, Zuma has not been expelled from the ANC and remains a staunch member.

Mbalula’s statement suggested that the ANC would not initiate disciplinary processes against Zuma as he had already left the party by opening his political party, thus violating the ANC constitution.

However, Ndhlela’s response contradicts this, affirming that Zuma is still an ANC member. During a press announcement on December 16, 2023, Zuma stated that he remains an ANC member and will continue to be one until the end.

Despite his continued membership, Zuma will not be attending the ANC’s January 8 proceedings, which mark the party’s 112th anniversary. The current ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa, will lead the celebrations.

Ndhlela explained that Zuma has been invited to various meet and greet events organized by MK, but he will not be addressed by President Ramaphosa, whom he does not recognize.

The ANC has faced criticism from political analysts for allowing Zuma to campaign for another political party while still being a member of the ANC.

This decision has raised concerns about potential divisions within the party and the possibility of sporadic protests. However, the ANC has chosen not to take a hard stance on the Zuma matter, possibly to avoid exacerbating these divisions.

It is worth noting that Zuma is the only living former ANC president who will not be attending the January 8 celebrations. While the reason for his absence is unclear, it is speculated that his involvement with his political party may be a contributing factor.

Additionally, it remains uncertain whether former ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule, who has been asked to step aside, will be in attendance.

The ANC’s 112th anniversary celebrations were expected to include various activities in the province of Mpumalanga, culminating in a cake-cutting ceremony. However, the absence of Zuma and the potential absence of Magashule may impact the dynamics of the event.
